New York Civil Liberties Union Teen Activist Project- Meet with members of the New York Civil Liberties Union and other students to ensure all of your rights are protected. Teen Activist Project (TAP) members learn about civil liberties and legal issues, reproductive justice, community organizing and activism. Students work together as peer educators to make sure the youth of New York know their rights, and create campaigns on issues the NYCLU is working on. Also, you can get paid for this!
Reel Works Documentary Lab- Don't just watch movies, learn how to make them! Reel works teaches you how to film, direct, record, and edit your own documentary about whatever story you want to tell with the help of your very own mentor. Once your film is complete, you get to screen it in a theater in front of a wide audience. This is a great way for you to learn what it's like to be a director and work in the film and TV industry.
G!rl Be Heard- G!rl Be Heard empowers people who identify as young women through performance, poetry, music, and through other artistic genres. The first session will take place Monday after school from 3:30-5:30. See Mr. King to learn more.
The Artists Student League Aspiring Artists Scholarship Program- The Aspiring Artist Scholarship program is a comprehensive professional-level oil painting program taught by a master artist for promising young artists still attending high school. Applicants who are accepted should make a full commitment in attending the program weekly for 8 months. For juniors and seniors.
New York Civil Liberties Union Student Ambassadors- Student Ambassadors are directly impacted high school students who speak publicly on NYCLU issues that affect youth such as the foster care system, metal detectors in schools, specialized high schools and high stakes testing, sex education and teen health, the immigration system, and the college admissions process. If you care about issues like these and are directly affected by them, you can get paid to share your story and explain to others why they matter to you!
Deloitte Academy- Learn about business from the best in business. Mentors from Deloitte, a professional services firm come to Brooklyn Prep on select Fridays to prepare students for careers in business and entrepreneurship. If you're interested and haven't participated in it yet, let me know and drop by during the next session!
School Art League/One Club for Creativity Art Careers Workshop- The Saturday Art Career Workshops bring NYC art students together with design professionals who
conduct interactive workshops sharing their expertise and career experiences. The series is targeted to students with a strong interest in visual arts and who intend to pursue the study of art after graduation.
Museum Apprentice Program, Brooklyn Museum- In this *paid internship*, you can immerse yourself in art and art history, and learn about museum education while creating your own lessons for audiences of all ages. And you make money!!!!
Futures and Options Career Essentials- This is a pre-internship program that prepares students for success in internships that pay later on and for other professional workplace experiences. Get tips on resume writing, interviewing, and take advantage of visits to businesses where you may be able to intern later.
Kenan Scholars Artists Collective- The Kenan Scholars Artist Collective (KSAC) is a vibrant year-long adventure specially crafted for 50 high school art enthusiasts aged 14 to 18. Picture a lively journey filled with creativity, culture, brainpower, and well-being that's as exciting as a rollercoaster ride! For artists interested in Digital Music Production, Media Arts & Design, Fashion, and the dazzling world of Performing Arts, which includes theater and the electrifying art of spoken word.
Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Arts and Justice- Do you think art can change the world? Unite your creativity and passion for social justice in this unique performing arts program. Led by BAM’s innovative teaching artists, come together with fellow high school students to create an original theater piece that speaks to an issue you’re fired up about—and then share it in a final performance in one of BAM’s state-of-the-art theaters.
Free SAT Prep for Juniors- Brooklyn Prep is offering SAT Prep for free for a limited number of 11th graders. If you're a junior who wants to impress colleges by absolutely crushing this exam, see Mr. King to sign up! Sessions take place on Tuesday evenings in small groups led by SAT experts.
YoungArts National Arts Competition- If you like to write, sing, perform, make films, draw, paint, create music, or express yourself creatively in other ways, you can submit a piece you've completed to the YoungArts National Arts Competition. YOu cna win a cash reward and gain access to mentors!
InterseXtions: Gender and Sexuality Internship, Brooklyn Museum- In this paid internship, New York City LGBTQ+ teens ages 14–19 explore gender and sexuality in art through an activist lens, and work collaboratively to organize programs for other queer and trans youth. Great opportunity if you're interested!
Noguchi Museum Teen Advisory Board- The Noguchi Museum’s Teen Advisory Board [TAB] is a paid internship for high school students. Each year, TAB interns plan projects that promote dialogue and inclusivity at the Museum. This year, TAB interns will focus their conversations around anti-racism. If you're interested in how art can serve the interest of social justice, you should apply!
Parson Scholars Program- The Parsons Scholars Program is a 2 ½ year college and career access program that centers people of color in the exploration of art and design. On Saturdays and during summers, high school students from NYC public schools explore their commitment to art and design as a tool for self expression, self discovery, social justice, and as college and career paths.
Breast Cancer Walk- Walk with Brooklyn Prep at the annual Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk at Coney Island! Show your commitment to curing breast cancer and enjoy a nice walk along the ocean shore on a nice fall day with friends and family. See Mr. King or Student Council members for more information.
Metropolitan Museum of Art, School-Year High School Internships- Get paid to be an intern at one of the most famous art museums in the world!!! If you're an art lover/creator, this is right up your alley. Not only can you make money and network with some amazing people, this experience looks great on a resume and college application.
