Advisory

Purpose: The primary purpose of advisory is to make sure that every student is known well by at least one adult. Advisory establishes a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment where students learn to set goals, make healthy choices, solve problems, and develop leadership skills. Students gain the tools and motivation to persevere and succeed in schools, social interactions, and eventually in college and/or a career.

Advisors will:
  • Connect with each of their advisees. Get to know them as people, not only as students.
  • Build a sense of community and safety within their advisory – not a group identity.
  • Learn their advisees’ academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Get to know the families of their advisees and contact them with both good and bad news.
  • Keep your advisory up-to-date on events, programs and after-school opportunities.
  • Meet with your advisees individually to talk with them about their lives and experiences at Brooklyn Prep.
  • Keep updated contact information for your advisees.
  • Make yourself available if your advisee is involved in a mediation, conflict or crisis.
Advisory Grading Policies:
  • 25% Journaling/Goal Setting (weekly journal entries, goal-setting sheets, conferences)
  • 25% Participation (ice breakers, parties, contribution to discussion, Town Hall)
  • 25% Citizenship (Community building, Classroom work, Town Hall)
  • 25% Homework/Projects/Classwork (portfolio pieces, group & individual projects, holiday assignments)
